Tuesday, September 23 Race Results (final 2008 races)

As we close out the 2008 Tuesday night track racing series I wanted to thank everyone that helped to make this series a success.

Twenty nine weeks ago we started this routine. Three weeks of open track training, twenty two weeks of racing, one rain out, one brown out, and a week off for masters track nationals.

901 riders helped to raise $7874 for our velodrome. 37% of the riders self selected the C category, 40% went into the Bs races and 23% came out for the A races. 17 percent of the riders were female, and 5% of the turnout was of junior age (and juniors always race for free). A huge heaping thank you goes out to Ella Benkowski, Jen Coler and Marc Franklin for the brownie and cookie primes. Thank you also to the SJBC for the nice bottle of wine!

I hope folks take the time to provide their feedback so that we can continue to improve this series.

Top two riders with an even number of points scored a brownie…

Tuesday, August 26 Race Results

Our new track sponges are in!

Above all, I’m a cycling fan. We had some great racing on Tuesday night. One of the best moments of the year came in the first As race on the last sprint of the 48 lap race. Ben Jacques-Mayne was leading Dirk Copeland by one point. Dirk just barely took Ben at the line. Great racing!

Week #25, whew. It was a beautiful night with calm 70 degree temps. And, the racing was hot. Thank you to all the riders that have supported this series and I look forward to some great racing in our final three Tuesdays of 2008 (September 9, 16 and 23).

31 starters for the A-B 84 lap points race! Super 70 degree temps.

Tuesday, August 5 Race Results

For the first time in 3 years of promoting Thursday and now Tuesday night track racing I laid down my whistle and jumped into the fray. It was a bit of a selfish act but I am so excited about Masters Track Nationals happening here in San Jose in a few weeks that I could barely contain myself. Of course, I could not have done so without the help from Angela, Jeff, Ali and Cathy (the birthday girl). The best part is that they picked up the routine in a flash which gives my wife hope that I won’t volunteer for 25 weeks in 2009. Thank you!

Thanks to the athletes for their continued promptness in getting to the fence to start the races as quickly as possible. In doing so we’re able to add laps so that’s more points to sprint for!

Brownie primes were provided once again by Dash, Jen and Marc. I will be sending out a survey soon asking about primes, prizes and entry fees so please get prepared to share your views

Tuesday, July 29 Race Results

18 weeks of racing on Tuesday Nights are behind us. That leaves us with seven Tuesdays remaining before elite track nationals. We will not be racing on September 2 as that date collides with masters track nationals. All seven dates (Aug. 5, 12, 19, 26, Sept. 9, 16 and 23) will be in the points race format.

I need a volunteer or two so that I can jump into the points races on Tuesday night. Ideally it will be a C or B rider that can score the As race. After watching last nights action I am convinced that my legs need to catch up with what I’m seeing out there. Check out the As scoring and you can see how close these race were. Exciting stuff! Please contact me if you can spare 40 to 100 laps of your time.

Thanks to Bob and Suki for flipping lap cards, we always can use help with the lap cards. Thanks once again to Marc and Jen for the freshly baked brownie primes!

Finally, we need ten women/ juniors in the C field to move the men to the Bs. Thanks go out to the men in the Cs that held back on their racing but still gained some pack experience.

Tuesday, July 15 Race Results

I was wrong… I thought that we would have a record number of riders show up on Tuesday but no. Maybe it’s the gas prices or the Oakland and San Jose criteriums but if folks think that they are going to do well at nationals without time on the track they may be in for a shocker. Nuf said!

So, we combined the As and Bs and ran three races for each group. Great time to practice pack skills, and the scramble for points was on…

Tuesday, July 1 Race Results

Back to points racing…. That’s what I’m talking about! A relatively large group of riders came out to race their bikes on a beautiful summer San Jose evening. Light winds and temps in the 70’s. It doesn’t get better than this!

Pop quiz: 4 person breakaway is collecting all the points. 3 take a lap and 20 extra points. 1 stays behind the pack. Who’s the leader on the track? It happened in the Bs race!

Another thank you to Marc and Jen for the Chocolate Chip cookie primes. Thanks go out to Jen for flipping lap cards too.

Tuesday June 24 race results

Tuesday, June 24 Race Results

Training races are almost always interesting and Tuesday night racing was no exception. A relatively low turnout but all three categories were racing hard. I’d like to give a special nod of appreciation to Derek Dixon who has been commuting regularly from Sacramento to make this series, to stretch his legs and to earn, in the true sense of the word, his upgrade scratch. Way to go Derek!

12 year old Dylan Drummond continues to spin his little heart out. He and his father Glenn have been regulars at this series and both have improved their speed, skills and sprints.

Finally, if I get a Hi-Ball vote I’d have to submit Sabine Dukes as my top choice. She is also a regular of the Tuesday nights and has progressed from pack rider to aggressor/ attacker. Look out when she starts working on her sprint!

Tuesday, June 17 Race Results

James Badia put in an impressive effort around 15 laps to go in the final race leaving everyone in awe...Obree style, just out there battling the pain and everyone else watching his stuggle. He tried to put over a lap, but the battered field still had enough strength to fight for pride. We did have a single crash inthe B's, and it was the fruity kind with huge raspberries and strawberries, though it had nothing to do with Giant Strawberry rider Keith Miller. Glen K spent most of the night sweeping the apron and half hopeful each time a brownie prime was rung, that he might run through the finish line broom in hand to claim his own prime. I hope there was enough for him to get one.

Thanks to Brian Peterson for running the races, for Kelyn showing up for a celebrity appearance before AVC and for all the riders who turned cards and rung bells including Jen and Dash. Just one note on lapping/getting lapped, please think ahead. If you are down and suddenly riders are there, stay down... riders will go over. It's alwasy nice if lapped riders move up, just not at the last minute! And if you are lapping riders, please yell stay so that people know you're coming.

Tuesday, May 27 Race Results

Your enjoyment at the track depends on your expectations and the experience that you are having out there. Michael’s Friday Night promoting is HOT right now because he is offering a great experience and a lot of fun. Tuesday night racing provides an opportunity to practice your endurance racing in a safe and friendly environment. But, let there be no bones about it, track racing is hard work. Once again it was my pleasure to watch people suffer out there, er, I mean it is always great to watch riders attack and sprint for points, and chocolate brownie primes. Thank you all for supporting this series.

Next Tuesday and for every Tuesday in June we return to scratch racing. Please check out the rulebook when you get a chance so that you understand why a rider is holding you up at the rail with two to go ;-)

Yet another thank you goes out to Marc and Jen for the Chocolate Brownie primes and to Dash, Amy and Liam for flipping lap cards. Marc also typed up the race results so a big thank you for doing that Marc!

We can always use more volunteers at the track so please let us know how you can help!

Tuesday, May 20 Race Results

It is such a pleasure for me to watch riders improve. Most improvements with cycling come in small doses and I would like to pass along a “congratulations” to all the riders that have improved over this series. Whether you’ve improved your sprint speed, your relaxing in the pack, your sense of timing or all of them this promoter has enjoyed the show. As we get closer to the big races of the summer I wish you all continued success, and luck in your perseverance towards your goals

Another thank you goes out to Marc and Jen for the Chocolate Chip cookie primes.

Tuesday, May 6 Race Results

Points Races are so much fun to watch. I had a blast out there tonight. Not only was there great racing but there were also some great efforts, including some notable rider improvements.

Eleven women showed up and ruled the first race of the night. Wow, was that fun to watch as Beth, Sabine, Alison and the gang played out their tactics. First class racing. Beth raced two Cs events and then placed 5th in the Bs event to fill her night. Sabine rode an impressively tactical race. Congrats to all.

The Bs racing is almost always the most competitive event of the evening. Check out how many riders scored points and were in contention! Very competitive.

And, finally the As race had a competitive event. I say this because the As usually have a few ringers show up and dominate, but not tonight as there was a full field of ringers. Yes, we are off to the races for 2008!

Thank you to Gerry for the Aussie Pies and to Marc and Jen for the Chocolate Brownies, which made for some great sprinting!

Points Races will be run for each of the Tuesday’s in May, July and September. Sprints will be every 5 laps for 5-3-2 and 1 point for first, second, third and fourth. If you gain a lap you take 20 points and if you lose a lap you lose 20 points, but can gain it back. If you intentionally lose a lap we do not want you to sprint. Points races tend to be more difficult than scratch races because the pace is lifted every 5 laps, but it is a great workout so I hope we continue to see the good number of people showing up on Tuesdays. Thank you for making this series a success. We will stick to the same C (30 laps), B (30 laps), C (30 laps), A (40 laps), B (40 laps), A (50 laps) format.

Thanks to Joe Fineman for working out the Clif Bar sponsorship and thank you to Jen, Mark and Dash for baking the cookies!

Cs Brief Commentary:
- 18 starters in the Cs. 60 laps in 31 minutes for a 24.2mph average. 9 women and juniors fell just shy of having their own field, so newcomer Kalman Ziegler took and early lap, then hit the front and dished out the pain. He will be racing with the Bs next time! Good racing and training for the remaining riders.

Bs Brief Commentary:
- 14 starters in the B race. 70 laps in 36 minutes for a 24.5mph average. I love watching the B races as the competition is usually a lot tighter and the racing is fast. Nole bridged up to Steven, Joel and Aaron and they gained their lap, then Steven and Nole went for another laps with Nole jumping across to the field before Steven. Steven persisted, as did Aaron behind him and all three had gained their second lap. Aaron went off the front with Joel at the end to seal the win over a fast charging Nole who flew from the field.

As Brief Commentary:
- 11 starters in the A race. 80 laps in 38 minutes for a 26.4mph average. Yikes, this race is proof that an average speed does not reflect the racing that we saw. The changes in speed were just what the riders needed to get into great shape, but not all riders could match all the changes in speed and fast pace. This sort of racing has happened in the past so I am taking a closer look at changing the race format.
